Pulses
Beans, lentils, chickpeas, baked beans, hummus
Avoid — On the avoid list of the leaflet this book follows, or restricted almost everywhere.
Stoma note: Can increase wind.
Swaps
- Instead of Baked beans or any pulses, use Extra meat, egg, cheese or well-cooked butternut squash for bulk and protein
- Pulses keep their tough outer skin however long they are cooked, so the protein and bulk need to come from somewhere else entirely.
- Instead of Lentil dal, use Plain white rice with ghee and a little ground turmeric
- Lentils keep their skins no matter how long they simmer, so this dish keeps the same savoury, spiced comfort with rice standing in for the dal. Some hospitals allow a fully puréed and sieved red lentil soup once tolerance has improved, though this is uncommon, so check with your own team.
- Instead of Hummus, use Whipped feta with olive oil, or a smooth cream cheese and garlic dip
- Chickpeas are excluded everywhere on this diet, so the same creamy, savoury dip comes from cheese instead of pulses.
